Stories from our neighborhood's great grandma
I talked to great grandma from our neighborhood about her favorite childhood foods and memories she cherished, to share for the Project Roots. She is from Gujrat and she shared so many stories with me.
I was first surprised to know that her favorite snack was same as my granny's favorite too. They both love "meegada" and Venna. Grandma told that her father used to take her in the night, to give her some that rich delicacy, hiding from her grandmother, as it is usually saved to make ghee for the family. That's so cute !!
Next ,she said that they used to take balls made of leftover chapathis as snacks. Surprisingly , this dish is also made in my granny's home and they call these as mallijalu.
She also told us about homemade wheat noodles and they still make them for wedding and special occassions. At my grandparent's house, they make this dish for many festivals and especially Diwali and Krishnanshtami.
However my granny is from a different state and the cuisines are totally different. I could see how cultures kind of mixed in and influenced each other.
